Jameson tears through town in the truck like a man on a mission, weaving through traffic like the kind of dickheads I would usually complain about, but I’m making an exception for today; that type of aggressive driving is needed.

I grip the headrest of Leo’s seat as he sits shotgun, every cell of my body is alive with anticipation, excitement, and determination. But I’ll take everything. Every drop of feeling and emotion is mine to own, and I’ll channel that anyway I have to. Just like I've continuously trained to do.

I recognize the roads as we near our house. The Vultures haven’t shown up yet. Ezra set up a link on my phone so we can monitor the situation from afar, and see everything going on so we can be fully prepared when they make their move. Nothing looks out of the ordinary, at least for now, but we know they’re coming, so it’s only a matter of time before that changes.

Leaning forward between their seats again, I can sense Jameson’s glare even though it’s not directly aimed at me as he keeps his gaze fixed on the road ahead.

“Seatbelt, Ella,” he snaps, just as I expect, and I roll my eyes.

“We’re nearly there, Jameson. Besides, I trust you,” I retort, shrugging my shoulders in nonchalance, and I don’t miss the slight tilt to the corner of his mouth.

Leo must catch it too because he scoffs. “Fucking whipped.”

“And you’re not?” Jameson replies without missing a beat, and neither of them say another word as Jameson takes the turn before our street. I frown in confusion, the question on the tip of my tongue, but he must sense it because he answers before I even get the chance to take a breath. “We’re going to take a different entrance to ensure we’re already inside when the Vultures arrive.”

I nod, like it all makes total sense, but I’m trying to figure out where he means. I’ve never considered what was on the other side of the backyard wall, or if there was even a gated entrance back here, but I trust he knows what he’s doing. It’s my turn to sit back and let him take the lead on this situation.

As he slows the truck, I slip back in my seat, taking a few deep, calming breaths before I glance down at myself, cataloging the weapons so I don’t miss anything.

We’re all in black combat boots, black combat pants with extra pockets above the knee, black high-neck t-shirts with long sleeves, and matching black gloves. As we were leaving, Leo handed me a black body harness that secured around my arms and waist, providing two underarm weapon holsters, and two at my hip. Apparently, if I think I’m being a part of this, I’ll be doing so fully loaded. Jagger’s words, not mine.
